DIY : Bulk Bag

Hi, everybody! 
Today, I'm offering you a little item to make your own bulk bags to pack your groceries and avoid disposable packaging!

Practical, reusable and pretty, bulk bags are the ideal companions to bring back your groceries from the grocery store or the supermarket. Don't hesitate to make them in all sizes to carry fruits, vegetables, nuts, starchy foods...


1.         What you need

• ·       Cloth (rather thin)
• ·       A sewing machine 
• ·       Thread, scissors and pins. 
• ·       A square of paper 
• ·       Twine (or a remnant of a ball for example)
• ·       A safety pin

 2.           Choosing the right fabric 


I advise you to choose natural fibres because the food will be in direct contact with your bag. So, organic cotton or linen are ideal and on top of that quite strong. However, if you feel like it, you can also use fabrics that you have recycled: a cotton voile curtain fall, shirt fabric or an old piece of clothing can do the trick. 


3.           Prepare your pattern and start folding 


For starters, I suggest a 30x30 cm square.

Then fold your fabric in half and iron it if necessary. It is important to keep about 1cm around the pattern. 


4.           Start sewing

After choosing what will be the top of your bag, you just have to sew two small hems that will finish the zipper to close the bag. 

Prepare the zipper on the top of your bag. Fold a double hem: fold a first time for about 1 cm, then a second time in the same direction for about 2 cm. You can run your iron through each fold, this helps to keep the fabric in place and makes sewing much easier. Then sew in straight stitch all along your hem.


5.           Almost finished. 


To finish, just attach your string to your safety pin and feed it through the zipper. Turn your bag over and it's ready !
