DIY : Tawashi
The tawashi sponge is invading the blogosphere and
may well revolutionize our cleaning habits. What if it's the end of the
traditional yellow and green sponge?
Associated with homemade household products, they
form a totally ecological duo but also economical since its duration of use is
at least 6 times longer than a classic sponge (yes yes 6 times you read
correctly).
On top of that, it is possible to make them from a
lot of materials (wool, crochet, jersey, tights...).
Traditionally, tawashi is knitted to form a tightly
knitted square of wool (youtube video available here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLpSldN2e3M ) but here, I propose a version of
tawashi from tights.
So let's go get an old spun tights and let's get
started!
1. Prepare
the material
- A pantyhose
- A wooden board
- 20 nails
- A hammer
- Scissors
2. With
your hammer: we prepare the loom
On the square draw a square of 14x14cm and mark 5
markers on each side (at 3cm then every 2cm).
On each marker, drive a nail in without driving it
in too hard.
Then cut out 10 strips of sticky tape about 3 cm
long and spread them out.
3. Now
we weave
On your loom, put 5 strips lengthwise.
Then weave across the width:
- For the first line: top / bottom / top / bottom /
top
- For the second line: bottom / top / bottom / top
/ bottom
And so on and so forth
4. Just
close the weave and it's done.
You can start at any end. You take one end and then
you move the second one inside and repeat the step until you reach the last
one.
Remember to leave the last one out so you can hang
the sponge up to dry.
